Abstract

Almost all of the rivers in the Belgorod Region originate within its territory. However, despite their abundance, the geography of these river sources remains understudied.  The distribution of river sources across the region is influenced by topography, climatic conditions, and hydrogeological features. This study focuses on one of these factors – topography. The aim of the work is to quantify how geomorphometric parameters are related to the location of river sources. The analyzed sample consists of river sources and randomly generated points of absence. Twenty-two geomorphometric parameters were calculated using the FABDEM digital elevation model. Biserial correlation coefficients were then calculated between the geomorphometric parameters and the presence of river sources. Among the obtained correlation coefficients, the highest absolute value is 0.7. For 10 of the 19 parameters, the absolute value of the correlation coefficient lies in the range from 0.3 to 0.5. The strongest correlations with the presence of river sources are geomorphometric parameters describing surface shape (convex or concave), position on a slope, and relief ruggedness. Relief parameters such as elevation, slope, and aspect have a weak influence on the presence of river sources. The presence of river sources is always negatively correlated with position on a slope. The correlation with surface convexity is often negative, while that with ruggedness is often positive. The obtained results can be used in selecting predictors for constructing river source location models.
