Territorial Trends of Demographic Processes in the Settlement System of the Orel Region

Currently, most of the regions of the Russian Federation are subject to the processes of depopulation and migration outflow of the population, which in turn hinders their sustainable socio-economic development. Using the example of the Orel region, we have studied trends in the demographic processes of the regional settlement system. The statistical analysis of demographic processes of natural and mechanical movement of the population revealed an acute problem of the region's depopulation: over the past ten years the population has decreased by more than 10%. The main factor influencing this situation is the natural decline of the population, exacerbated by the constant migration outflow. The study shows differences in the rates of depopulation between municipalities, and the center-peripheral gradient is pronounced in the settlement system of the Orel region, where the most acute decline is observed in marginal municipalities. The paper suggests possible measures to improve the demographic situation, including the development of social infrastructure, improved healthcare, and job creation. The region needs a comprehensive approach to solving the problem of depopulation, taking into account economic, social, and environmental aspects.
