Abstract

The problem of the natural fresh water pollution of Iraq`s rivers by cations of transition metal is considered in this article. The main uses of water in Iraq are irrigation, electricity generation and drinking water supply. At the same time, agriculture is the most active consumer of water. It is shown that the uncontrolled discharge into the river basins of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates of wastewater with a high content of pollutants of domestic and technogenic origin has led to a progressively unsatisfactory ecological situation. The researching results of water samples from the Euphrates River from 8 water intake stations are presented. An excess of the maximum permissible concentration of transition cations such as nickel, cadmium and lead in natural waters was revealed by more than 200 times. The pollution of the natural water Iraq`s rivers is a consequence of climatic features and of the lack of proper supervision of enterprises that carry out uncontrolled discharge of wastewater into the natural hydrosphere and the unsatisfactory state of urban wastewater treatment plants.
