Abstract

An integral analysis of natural conditions and other factors plays an important role in determining the potential of a territory for the development of settlements. Although GIS tools can effectively implement this analysis, which is actively used in scientific research, no unified approach to a comprehensive assessment of territories has been developed so far. The study is aimed at creating a methodology for a comprehensive assessment of the suitability of a set of physical, geographical, and economic factors for the development of settlements. Three thematic blocks have been identified: favorable climate, convenience of the territory's topography, and accessibility of key natural objects for infrastructure development. Approaches to the classification of these factors have been proposed. The authors used QGIS to implement the proposed approaches. The latter were tested by analyzing a set of spatial data for the Novosibirsk region. As a result, a number of thematic maps were created that reflect the interconnections of individual factors, which allowed for preliminary assessments of the location and identification of favorable and negative factors for the development of settlements in the study area.
